This was ad-libbed by the voice actor, Craig Ferguson and they chose to keep it in because they loved it. Kids won’t get it but adults will be thinking “did he just imply what I think he implied?”

And later the director confirmed it.

DeBlois revealed that, the reason Gobber never got married, is because he is homosexual. This makes him the first homosexual character of the franchise, and even DreamWorks itself.

Every time I see this post it is usually accompanied by a negative comment about how Dreamworks chickened out, how they suck at being progressive, or just a general complaint that “It’s not enough!!!”.

Maybe it’s not the coming out most people wanted, but it’s a step.  A big step.  The mention in the movie, a movie meant for young audiences at that, was enough to make teens and adults question… but for them to ACTUALLY reveal that this character is gay?  Yeah that’s awesome and here’s why:

For Dreamworks, a company that never does just okay, but either flunks or rocks it hard, this could have jeopardized the entire movie.  Imagine if groups, like One Million Moms for example, decided to protest the movie because of this one character.  We all know they would.  The last four animated movies that Dreamworks released did not bring the company as much profit as it estimated or needed.  No matter how great you think RotG or The Croods was, because they were pretty rad, they did not get received by the general audience.  Dreamworks basically put everything into HTTYD 2 with the hopes it would keep the animation department alive and well.

With everything riding on this movie, they still put that line in there.  They did not have to make that character gay, it’s not important to the story.  They did it because they feel representation is necessary, but they also had to be careful about it because the number of bigots around the world is still high enough to hurt a movie.

It is a step.  If we don’t appreciate the basic steps towards representation in the media we’ll never reach it.   Thank you Dreamworks.

Remember Wendy Davis?

You know, the badass democrat who fillibustered for 11 hours straight to conserve women’s rights in Texas?

image

Well, this wonderful and amazing woman has announced her campaign for Texas governor!

image

Let’s show her some goddamn support!

Her opponent, Greg Abbott, is all about “traditional values.”

What fucking good have “traditional values” ever done for anyone?

Not a goddamn thing, that’s what. Vote for Wendy Davis.
